Sixth Development Shoot

This shoot is inspired by my last shoot and the work of both Jenny Holzer and Davis Ayer. Again, I have taken the projection of bold white text from Holzer’s work and the projection onto a model from Ayer’s work – this time, though, I have chosen to bring my model’s black clothing back from my previous shoots as I think that this may make my images more effective.

As with my previous shoot, I shot these images having turned off every light in the studio, using the projector as the only light source. Again, I think this is effective in making my images slightly more moody in homage to Ayer’s style.

I think my images are also made more ambient by the use of monochrome in homage to Holzer’s work. I used a black and white adjustment layer in Photoshop (as I have in previous shoots) in order to make my images black and white. I chose to do it this way rather than shooting using the in-camera black and white mode as this method allows me to adjust certain colour channels myself rather than doing it for me automatically.

The black clothing I asked my model to wear, I think, has the intended effect of keeping the focus on my model’s face because the rest of her body blends into the backdrop ever so slightly. I continued to ask my model to wear her make up as she would everyday as I wanted my work to continue to be a representation of the way my model presents herself and her personality.

I asked my model to stand quite close to the backdrop when shooting these images so as to minimise the amount of shadow cast across the backdrop, as I felt that this had the potential to break my images up too much and create a bit too much darkness. While I want my images to be ambient, I don’t want them to come across too dark as my model has a very bright and quite outgoing personality, and I don’t want this aspect of her identity to be completely withdrawn from the images.

I think this shoot has been more effective than my last and so I plan to continue to have my model in black clothing for further shoots.
